Transgene

A transgene is a gene which has been deliberately introduced into an organism, often via genetic engineering or gene therapy, to correct a genetic defect or provide new instructions for producing specific proteins. The transgene's purpose is to modify the cells so they can perform a specific function or produce a particular protein. In a research setting, this may be done to study a genetic disease in an animal model. In the clinic, the purpose is to treat or prevent a disease.
